Dead Space 4 not currently in development, series not canned

Shortly after the release of Dead Space 3, the fate of the series has been uncertain. Due to the game not meeting sales figures that would keep the series “viable” in the eyes of EA, the series’ future has been questioned for some time now. In an interview with Eurogamer, EA Games Label boss Patrick Söderlund has confirmed that Dead Space 4 is not in the works, but the series has not been canned. “I wouldn’t say it’s [Dead Space franchise] cancelled at all,” Söderlund told Eurogamer. “Dead Space remains a brand that is close to Electronic Arts’ heart. It’s been a great brand for us done by a very passionate team.”

Söderlund then announces that the Dead Space team is developing a new game, as opposed to Dead Space 4.

“Is that team working on a Dead Space game today? No they’re not. They’re working on something else very exciting. You have to think of it from that perspective. Is it better to put them on the fourth version of a game they’ve done three previous versions of before? Or is it better to put them on something new that they want to build, that they have passion for?”

“Will there be another Dead Space game? Who knows? Have we killed it? No, of course not. But right now that dev team is focused on something else that you and other gamers will be very happy with.”

Hopefully, we will indeed see the return of Dead Space. Perhaps, after developing a new game, Visceral Games and EA will revisit this horror series with fresh eyes and a better view of how to keep it in-tune with what fans want. If Mirror’s Edge 2 exists, I don’t think EA plans on killing the Dead Space series anytime soon.
